Diama Expedition 2008
From May 16 to July 17 2008 Markus Gschwendt, Clara Kulich and Tommy Steiner are planning the ascent of Nanga Parbat (8125m) in Pakistan.
The team wants to „follow Mummery’s attempt on Nanga Parbat with minimal logistics, self-organised and with best avoidance of unnecessary risks.“ The undertaking has „real“ expedition character, since the aim is the complete ascent of the north-west slope (Diama glacier). This route has been tried several times (the last attempt was by Reinhold Messner in 2000), but it has never been climbed to the summit in one go.
The three past-time alpinists have prepared for this trip with mountaineering projects on various high South- American, Himalayan and Alaskan peaks and with numerous challenging trips in the Alps in order to meet the psychological, physical and group-dynamical challenges awaiting them.
